Well Buckaroos, Texas Rourke and Texas Mel are at it yet again! Yup! It’s movie night, we’re watching Urban Cowboy and making up a yummy drink to coincide!
If you are new to this series, let me catch you up. Rourke and I are making our way through this movie-themed cocktail book one libation at a time. We have already enjoyed Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom and The Empire Strikes Back. This time we are enjoying Urban Cowboy with a drink called “Bourbon Cowboy.”
Here’s what you need:
Recipe for “Bourbon Cowboy”:
(makes 1 drink)
4 basil leaves divided
2 dashes of Angostura bitters
2 ounces bourbon
1 1/2 ounces sweet tea
1/2 ounce lemon juice
Muddle basil leaves and bitters in a shaker. Add the remaining ingredients and ice and shake well. Strain into a julep cup and top with ice. (I like to use Sonic ice. You can buy a bag of it in the drive-thru for @$2.50). Garnish with basil leaves.
I used a bandana as a cocktail napkin. I decorated with yellow roses since it was a Texas theme.
Okay, about the film….First of all, LOVE, LOVE,LOVE the soundtrack! I grew up listening to old country music, thanks to my parents. I immediately went and downloaded the soundtrack after we finished watching the movie. Second of all, as far as Bud and Sissy, I’m thinking the whole time during the movie, “How hard-headed these two are!” Just get over it, and say your sorry!!
A little trivia…..John Travolta was offered the main role in American Gigilo, but turned it down to play in Urban Cowboy, and Richard Gere took the role. Two months before production started, John installed a mechanical bull in his home to practice. He got so good at it, the producer allowed John to do his own riding in the film instead of a double.
Sissy Spacek started out with the role of Texas Sissy, but she and John had a falling out and wouldn’t work together. It was then between Michelle Pfeiffer and Deborah Winger. The director through a fit, only wanting Deborah Winger.
Gilley’s was the largest honky-tonk in Texas owned by Mickey Gilley. BTW, Mickey Gilley, Jimmy Swaggert and Jerry Lee are all cousins and are from Louisiana!
I hope you try this movie night idea! I really enjoyed the movie and music, and of course, the partnering drink!
